2024-2025 : Quiltworks

The Quiltworks paintings are a series of composite panels, each with varying degrees of surface relief echoing fabric pleats. The panels employ variations of a traditional quilting pattern known as tumbling blocks. The same pattern also draws on the geometric symmetry groups used to map crystalline molecular structure, highlighting how a mapping of the world via patterns is central to both scientific and craft thinking. The combination of colour, pattern and surface relief create an undulating and uncertain spatial tension, linked to the capacity of textiles to drape, stretch and pleat. While science may use patterns to pin down an understanding of the world, the spatiality of textiles highlights how our experience of the world can exist in flux and fold.
