I have had a long-term fascination with diagrams and their relationship to abstraction. Often information is pared back to simple lines, or shapes. Rather than reading this as a reductive process, I am interested in how, via the process of abstraction of information, diagrams become different to rather than lesser than their source material. In the summer of 2012-2021 I made a series of books containing gouache paintings of circle ‘diagrams’. Circles, like squares, are a simple format to which I find myself returning time and time again. Also like squares, circles seem to present a format which is both defining and offering infinite possibilities.
